Figure 9.2. Spiegle used Craftint Doubletone to achieve nearly photographic realism in his Hopalong Cassidy; notice the different shades of gray on the lamp hanging from the ceiling in the top strip. Fred Harman deployed the same technique in early Red Ryder (next down the page), but he eventually abandoned gray tones in favor of simple black-and-white brush strokes, suitable for depicting warped wood as well as energetic action. At left, a close-up of Red; lower right, in what is doubtless one of the last pictures Harman made of Red and Little Beaver, they explain why they aren’t in the newspaper anymore.
